Beare’s Premiere Music Festival 2020: 
35 world-class musicians in town for 2 weeks of music-making

Hong Kong – From 8 to 16 January, Beare’s Premiere Music Festival 2020 (previously the Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival) hosts 35 internationally acclaimed musicians for 6 ticketed concerts and 10 free outreach events. Artists include returning Artistic Director Cho-Liang Lin, Finnish pianist and composer Olli Mustonen, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s principal flautist Emily Beynon, leading harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani and many more internationally acclaimed musicians.

Six World-class Chamber Music Programmes:

Opening Night: The Complete Brandenburg Concertos

Rarely performed as a complete set, here is the chance to experience the majesty of J.S. Bach’s six Brandenburg Concertos in one unmissable concert. With their irresistible energy, unforgettable melodies and diverse instrumentation, the Brandenburgs are the definition of what good music should be.
Over 25 musicians including Cho-Liang Lin (violin), Paul Neubauer (viola), DaXun Zhang (double bass), Radovan Vlatković (horn), Emily Beynon (flute), and Mahan Esfahani (harpsichord) will participate in the performance.

When Breath Becomes Sound

This concert focuses on the virtuosity of musicians who use their breath as the force to create music – voice, woodwind and brass, with works by Poulenc, Schumann and Brahms.

The Martial Arts Trilogy

Tan Dun's epic film music will be performed live to projections of some of the stunning cinematic moments that his music has scored. The concert features music and film excerpts from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero and The Banquet, arranged for piano, violin and cello.

Sunday Afternoon Chamber Music

Add some spice to your Sunday afternoon with a concert that mixes strings with the playful timbres of marimba, wind and brass. The concert’s second half features Bach’s beautiful Goldberg Variations, uniquely reimagined by the Borromeo Quartet.

Beethoven & Mustonen

Beethoven’s piano works are performed by one of today’s foremost interpreters of his repertoire, pianist Olli Mustonen, along with compositions by Mustonen himself including the Asia Premiere of Taivaanvalot for tenor, cello and piano.

Musicians include Olli Mustonen (piano), Borromeo String Quartet, Aaron Boyd (violin), Robin Tritschler (tenor) and more.

Festival Finale: Mendelssohn Octet

The Festival comes to a close with Mendelssohn’s adored Octet. Performed off the composer’s original manuscript, the performance includes 100 bars of unpublished original music. The programme also includes String Quartet in F major Op 59 No. 1 by Beethoven, and a Premiere Performances commission world-premiere by composer Lei Liang.

Masters of source interpretation, the Borromeo Quartet, will be joined on stage by Cho-Liang Lin and other festival musicians for an evening of music making as intellectually stimulating as it is emotionally rich.
