The group, whose name means “end of the world”, formed in 2005 and comprises of four distinctly talented members: Nakajin (group leader, lead guitar, sound production); Fukase (lead vocals, group conceptualist); Saori (stage production, piano); and the masked clown DJ LOVE (comedic stage banter).
Since their debut, they have released 3 albums and various singles as well as their own documentary film “Tokyo Fantasy”. Their latest album “Tree”, released in 2015 went to #1 on the Oricon charts and was certified 2x platinum by the RIAJ (Recording Industry Association of Japan). They also scored several Top 2 singles on the Oricon charts and Billboard Japan Hot 100 with songs like “RPG”, “Snow Magic Fantasy”, “Hono to Mori no Carnival”, “SOS” and more. Their success is also evident on YouTube, as their massive 2013 hit “RPG” has reached more than 110 million views on the social video site https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi9uNu35Gmk. With multiple commercial tie-ins, features in TV and movies, they have conquered the Japanese music scene.
The group most recently collaborated with British act Clean Bandit, supporting their show in the U.S. and did a remix of their hit single “Rockabye” (https://atlanti.cr/rockabyeeotw). They also worked with renowned Dutch DJ / Producer Nicky Romero on the release of their hit single “Dragon Night”. SEKAI NO OWARI also performed the official theme songs for the Attack on Titan movies based on the world-famous comic book – “Anti-Hero” and “SOS”.
In 2015, SEKAI NO OWARI’s two shows at Japan’s largest venue, Nissan Stadium which seats 70,000 people, sold out in a matter of hours. The group’s originality and creativity known as “Tokyo Fantasy” were highlighted by their massive fantasy stage setup, a high-concept, reality-redefining magic treehouse and exotic town. Such fearlessness in stage design and entertainment value has become the envy of the Japanese music industry. They have performed all over Japan, including a 11-city, 25-performance arena tour that brought in more than 250,000 fans, and have sold out the legendary Budokan.
The band is now ready to take their originality and imaginative shows to music fans overseas, having toured in the US, Korea, China, and Taiwan where their 2015 gig sold out in under two minutes. In 2016, they became the first Japanese artist to join the MTV World Stage in Malaysia, and also performed here at Clockenflap- Hong Kong’s Music & Arts Festival in November. The band plans to release an English-language album in 2017.
Their inimitable talent and ability to appeal to a wide range of listeners has put them at the top of Japan’s current generation of artists. With their recent collaborations and multi-media projects the group is quickly spreading their brand around the globe. This is only the beginning for SEKAI NO OWARI (a.k.a. End of the World); a whole new world awaits.
