For the first time in the festival’s history, it will host a Composer-in-Residence, Australian violist and composer Brett Dean. In demand around the world, Dean most recently served as Artist in Residence for the Taiwan Philharmonic. His upcoming role with the HKICMF represents a new collaboration between Premiere Performances, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the New Music Ensemble, who will all perform Dean’s compositions alongside Dean himself.
Three of Dean’s compositions will be paired with works by Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart, offering audiences a taste of both contemporary and classical styles.
Six concerts (outlined in Appendix II) will be presented at Hong Kong City Hall Theatre, the Concert Hall in the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and, for the first time, the Festival will have concerts in the New Territories, at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall and Sha Tin Town Hall Auditoriums.
In addition to showcasing the compositions of Brett Dean, other highlights of this year’s Festival include a lecture-recital by Borromeo String Quartet entitled “Inside Beethoven’s Mind”, and a chamber music concert designed for family audiences called “The Emperor’s New Clothes”.
