I’ve always been hesitant to try pole dancing as I really don’t see myself spinning on a pole without looking like a fool. I have two left feet, no skill or grace and absolutely no sense of rhythm. Ever since a friend told me I “dance like I have ants in my pants” in a belly-dancing class two years ago, I was scarred. Surely a fat fireman sliding down a pole would look sexier than me.
As I made my way to Pole Paradise Studio, my mind raced with visions of something reminiscent of a Pussycat doll or Christina Aguilera music video: platinum blondes frolicking around in six inch heels and hot pants. I have to admit, I was apprehensive, scared even. To my surprise the reality was somewhat different and just as glamorous as a day at a gym class; it felt rather comfortable with twelve or so women in a room, laughing and giggling as they attempt to spin on the pole.
Founded by Symone Dolai, Pole Paradise Studio is Hong Kong’s newest and tallest aerial studio located in Sheung Wan. Symone has performed on pole and other aerial disciplines in Hong Kong and other countries around the world for more than 10 years. When I arrived and first met her I noticed how athletic, acrobatic and fit she looked, not to mention, very slim- not suprising as pole dancing can improve your body tone, increase flexibility, strengthen cardio and give you sexy body curves.
We began with some warm up exercises for 10 minutes. The basic movements are easy enough for instance moving the bottom, swaying the body and strutting sexily around the pole. Then we got stuck straight into the spinning part.

I felt as though I was clinging on for dear life and had none of Symone's effortless grace and poise but I got over my fear rather quickly. Following this pole trick, we learned the beginning of the dance taught throughout level one classes. Movements were slow, combining elements of ballet, yoga, Pilates, with a lot of sexy attitude. After a few failed attempts, I managed to get the hang of gracefully falling back into a twirl. Before we knew it, one hour passes and we finish off with some stretches.
I woke up the next morning with bruises on my inner thigh and lots of muscle ache but boy it felt good!
If you’re wondering how long you’ll need to spend to acquire the dance movements, it really depends on your physical fitness but most of the girls in the room seemed to have no problems with the moves and spins. The great thing about pole dancing is the fact that it doesn’t feel like a workout session, it’s a lot of fun and the reason why pole dancing courses are preferred these days.
